Summer Sings: Sing Along with PSC!
What is Summer SIngs?
Summer Sings creates connections through audience participation, broadening choral music’s reach and relevance in Portland through 3 free sing-along educational audience participatory concerts in July and August. Summer Sings is immersive, multigenerational, and participatory!
When is summer sings?
Wednesdays July 17, August 7, and August 21 2024 at 7:00 pm
Summer Sings is For All
Come, pick up a score, and sing along next to members of the Portland Symphonic Choir. This experience educates singers and audiences and uplifts area conductors, soloists, and community singers. If you are more comfortable just listening, that’s fine too!
And yes, Summer Sings is Air-conditioned!

O fortuna! Sing along with PSC’s singers through the Carmina Burana. Sign up ahead of time and let us know your voice part! Scores available to borrow, but we recommend bringing your own!
The Second Summer Sings:
A Dialogue on Access and Inclusivity in Choral Music in PDX

Historic Alberta House
Judy A. Rose, Composer and Conductor, leads assembled singers in songs in the aural tradition and a dialogue on access and inclusivity specific to choral music in Portland with four guest panelists.
Judy A. Rose has a B.S. and M.Ed from Portland State University. She worked for Portland Public Schools as a music teacher for 20 years. Judy has been an active music director, accompanist and singer in the Vancouver, WA/Portland Metro area. Judy enjoys playing the Native American Flute, birding, wildlife photography and spending time with her family. Judy & her spouse, share their home with Naomi, a rescued Cardigan Corgi & Chesapeake Retriever mix in Portland, OR
CALL FOR SCORES
Emerging Composers
Goals:
encourage the creation of socially and culturally aware new works for classically-oriented large choirs.
Promote compositions by emerging composers from historically marginalized groups (i.e. BIPOC, LGBTQI+, and women composers)
Submission Requirements:
There are no stylistic restrictions on scores except that they be written for a large choral ensemble.
Your composition should be at least three minutes long and no more than ten minutes
If there are instruments, please make a piano reduction.
Singers for the event will include the Portland Symphonic Choir membership, students from the Portland metro area, PSC alumni, and community members.
Prizes:
Composers selected to participate in the Summer Sings New Works reading session will each receive a $300 stipend and are encouraged to attend the reading session in the summer, though attendance is not mandatory.
One composition of the three will be chosen for performance on Portland Symphonic Choir’s Wintersong 2024 concert. Please note that Wintersong is a choral concert with piano only.

CALL FOR SCORES
High School Composers
The Portland Symphonic Choir invites high school composers to submit scores for its first ever youth call for scores
Submission Requirements:
Applicants must be high-schoolers or recent high-school graduates – i.e., you must have completed either Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year at the end of 2024.
Your composition should have at least three voice parts (ex. SAB)
Your composition should be at least three minutes long and no more than ten minutes
If there are instruments, please make a piano reduction.
Singers for the event will include the Portland Symphonic Choir membership, students from the Portland metro area, PSC alumni, and community members.
Prizes:
The three youth composers selected to participate in the Summer Sings New Works reading session will each receive a $200 stipend and coaching from a choral mentor.
One composition of the three will be chosen for performance on Portland Symphonic Choir’s Wintersong 2024 concert. Please note that Wintersong is a choral concert with piano only.
